We are thrilled to announce that Carbon Maps' environmental accounting platform has received a certificate of compliance from Bureau Veritas, a global leader in testing, inspection, and certification services known for their rigorous standards and impartial assessments. This certificate validates the compliance of our methodologies with ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 standards, confirming the robustness and reliability of the automated Life Cycle Assessments carried out by our platform.

What the assessment and verification entails

The comprehensive assessment, conducted between April 19, 2024, and July 1, 2024, concluded that Carbon Maps' methodologies are solid and well-structured. The specific areas of evaluation pertain to:

  • Data Collection
    • Methodology
    • Data quality
    • Life Cycle Inventory
  • The calculation method
    • Mapping verification
    • Analysis of the calculations
  • Result interpretation

What the ISO Standards signify

This is a table that describes what the ISO standards 14049, 14044 and 14067 signify. These are scientific normes for conducting Life Cycle Analysis.
  1. ISO 14040: Environmental Management – Life Cycle Assessment – Principles and Framework
This standard provides the framework and principles for conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It ensures that all LCA studies are consistent, transparent, and scientifically-based by defining the stages of LCA (goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation).
  2. ISO 14044: Environmental Management – Life Cycle Assessment – Requirements and Guidelines
ISOO 14044 complements ISO 14040 by detailing the requirements and guidelines for conducting an LCA. It outlines specific methods for inventory analysis, impact assessment, and the interpretation of results, providing a more detailed methodology to ensure reliable and consistent LCAs.
  3. ISO 14067: Greenhouse Gases – Carbon Footprint of Products – Requirements and Guidelines for Quantification and Communication
This standard focuses on the quantification and reporting of the carbon footprint of products (CFP). It provides principles, requirements, and guidelines for measuring and communicating the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the life cycle of products, facilitating transparency and comparability in carbon footprint assessments.

These standards provide a clear, scientific framework for calculating the environmental impact and carbon footprint of products throughout their life cycle.

Building trust through third-party verification

For our clients and partners, this certification of compliance provides an additional layer of trust and assurance. It guarantees that the product-level assessments conducted at scale through our platform are based on internationally recognized standards and provide reliable and actionable insights. This enhances our ability to support food industry players—from producers and cooperatives to food brands, retailers, and food service providers—in their sustainability efforts.

In the context of increasing regulatory pressures and accelerating climate change, having a third-party assessed partner is crucial. Regulations such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) require companies to provide transparent and auditable reports on their environmental impact and on their supply chain. With our Bureau Veritas-verified platform, companies in the food industry can confidently meet these regulatory requirements, and more importantly, pursue their impact reduction targets through different levers such as supplier engagement, sustainable purchasing, and eco-design and product development. Through it, we empower actors in the food industry to incorporate sustainability in key operational decisions.
